Saffron Walden U3A

We are a self-help, self-managed, lifelong learning co-operative for those who are retired or semi-retired, providing opportunities for our members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun.

Most of our 600 plus members reside in and around the ancient town of Saffron Walden – a market town since 1141, famed for its many pargetted buildings.

New members are always welcome, See our Membership and Contact page for details about joining or to make contact.

We currently run about 36 classes and activities as listed on our Groups page. Term times are similar to school terms, running from September to July but a number of groups meet throughout the year.

Cinema

Saffron Screen is a community-based not-for-profit initiative based at Saffron Walden County High School.  It offers a wide range of films for all ages and now with the advantage of digital projection equipment (funded entirely by public donations) we can see plays, concerts and other events from theatres concert halls and other venues on the big screen with Dolby digital surround sound.

Concerts, and other theatre

Saffron Hall is the UK’s brand new state of the art performance space which plays host to a year-round programme of music, theatre and other arts events.  Situated in Saffron Walden, the historic market town where South Cambridgeshire meets North Essex, Saffron Hall is a highly flexible 730-seat auditorium with exceptional adjustable acoustics.  Performances by the Britten Symphonia, John Lill, the Brodsky Quartet and Germaine Greer are just a few of those presented in the first few months since this truly stupendous hall was completed.

For those willing to travel a little further, Cambridge has a thriving musical life, featuring for instance the City of Cambridge Symphony Orchestra who, though not a professional orchestra, play a wide range of works with passion and precision at the superb West Road Concert Hall  Follow the link on the name above for details of the orchestra and programmes.
Other music in this vibrant city, day-time and evenings, may be found at https://www.cambridgeconcerts.com/
